Education Essentials: May 2022
Thursday, May 26, 2022

Mental Health Awareness Month

1. psychological well-being and satisfactory adjustment to society and to the ordinary demands of life.

2. the field of medicine concerned with the maintenance or achievement of such well-being and adjustment.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. In recognition of the importance of mental health on all aspects of life, this month's issue of Education Essentials will provide you with resources for wellness and self-care, as well as tips for optimizing your work life and managing burnout.

Optimizing Emotional Intelligence for an Optimal Work Life

In this blog post by Preethi Fernando, author and keynote speaker, discover how emotional intelligence can help us navigate change, feel more connected and enhance our work lives. Emotionally intelligent people often leave others in a state of increase and leave people, places and jobs better than they found them. To help optimize workplaces and create an emotionally intelligent workforce, employers should address conflict, bring employees in on the big picture, uncover hidden talents that may lie beneath the surface and be transparent.

For even more on emotional intelligence, check out this recent FICP Anytime webinar on the topic with Preethi Fernando and view the infographic below for key highlights from her blog post.

Wellness and Self-Care FICP Resources

Practicing self-care has been clinically proven to reduce or eliminate anxiety and depression, reduce stress, improve concentration, minimize frustration and anger, increase happiness, improve energy and more. Here are curated FICP resources to help you take care of yourself and, in turn, be a better leader and event professional.

Join the Conversation

An important component to caring for your mental health is fostering connections, building relationships and learning from others. Visit this discussion thread on TheNetwork for a message from Jennifer Squeglia, CMP as she shares a past FICP Chats event on self-care and join the conversation with your peers.

Partnering Through the Comeback

In-person events are roaring back, and, while there are challenges and opportunities, both meetings professionals and hospitality partners ultimately want the same thing: Highly successful events with happy and healthy attendees. Last month, the FICP community came together for an FICP Chats session: “Partnering Through the Comeback.” In this discussion, there were a number of important questions raised about the state of meetings and events as well as critical information and background shared about our current state and where we expect the industry to go.

To help answer some of these questions, FICP is pleased to introduce the report, "Partnering Through the Comeback," in which FICP’s hospitality partner community shares talking points across six key questions to help meetings professionals educate themselves and their stakeholders as we steer through the next several months. Read the summary and download the report to learn more.

Together for Mental Health

Each year millions of Americans face the reality of living with a mental illness. During May, the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) joins the national movement to raise awareness about mental health to fight stigma, provide support, educate the public and advocate for policies that support people with mental illness and their families. Help amplify their message of "Together for Mental Health," and find resources and advocacy tools for mental health and access to care on their website.

Overcoming Burnout

Burnout can set in if we don’t give ourselves a chance to recover (both mentally and physically) and expose ourselves to constant stress and pressure. Therefore, it's important to figure out how to recover on a daily basis to stop this downward progression in its tracks and reach our fullest potential. In this article by Dr. Greg Wells, you'll find tips for overcoming overwhelm and burnout, including getting outside for a walk, listening to music, meditating, talking to a friend and pausing before you perform.

For even more on reaching your potential, don't miss Dr. Wells' keynote presentation at the 2022 FICP Education Forum, taking place June 22-24 in Pasadena, California. In this session, Dr. Wells translates complex science about brain waves, activation pathways and mind-body connections into usable techniques and bio hacks so that attendees can learn how to energize the body to engage the mind, trigger brainwaves to amplify focus and leverage sleep and nature to boost creativity.

#TBT – Work Is Not a Four-Letter Word

In this blog post from February, Jenna Jorge president of Goodman Speakers, examines the relationship with work and offers words of wisdom from speakers on the future of work, leadership and getting the most out of your career.
