Impact

[im-pakt]

  1. the force exerted by a new idea, concept, technology or ideology
  2. influence; effect

How can you take your work in the meetings and events industry to the next level? When thinking beyond a promotion, the answer lies in the impact of your work. How are people being affected and influenced by your work? Is your work changing how businesses and organizations think about meetings? Amplifying the reach and impact of your work doesn’t have to be as daunting as it sounds. In this Education Essentials, we’ll provide you with some suggestions for how to increase the impact of your work as a meetings professional.

How Important is My Work?

In a single year, meetings generated $845 billion in economic impact and supported 5.9 million American jobs. This is just one of the findings from the new Economic Significance Study, released last month by the Meetings Mean Business Coalition and Events Industry Council. This updated study demonstrates the continued positive economic impact of face-to-face meetings and business events on the U.S. economy. If you’re looking for some additional statistics that highlight the economic impact and value of our industry, check out the full  report. At your own company, meetings and events also educate and recognize your colleagues, resulting in improved performance and greater efficiencies.

First Steps: Getting Your Foot in the Door

Although impact is bigger than a promotion, it can never hurt. This Plan Your Meetings article from April 2012 provides timeless suggestions for how to get a seat at the executive table.

The Certified Meetings Professional (CMP) designation can open the door to more and better opportunities in the meetings and events industry. Not only are employers seeking CMP-certified individuals, achieving your CMP gives you additional earning potential. Did you know that CMPs earn $10,500 a year more than their colleagues without the designation? Learn more about how you can elevate your career and, in turn, amplify your impact in the industry.

FICP Short: How to Demonstrate Your Value

This FICP Short from Crystal Neubauer highlights tips for communicating and demonstrating your competency, knowledge and the overall value you contribute to your financial or insurance company.

Financial Impact

This case study from Ann Luketic highlights how a strong partnership with her travel company led to a cost savings strategy for her organization, combating rising travel costs.

Check out these session notes from the 2017 FICP Annual Conference Idea Exchange on ROI and ROE. They provide a great breakdown of the start-to-finish process so if you don’t know where to start, this is a great resource.

Erin Longo, CMP, wants to know the ways you demonstrate the ROI of the meetings you support and the impact your work makes on the business. Share your thoughts in this thread on TheNetwork.

Global Meetings Industry Day

Global Meetings Industry Day (GMID) is intended to shine a light on the real impact meetings and events have on businesses, economies and communities. April 12, meeting and event industry association chapters, corporations, destinations, partners and more are being encouraged to hold events in destinations all around the world to support this day of advocacy. How will you celebrate this important day? Want to host or join a GMID event in your area? Use these resources from the Meetings Mean Business Coalition.

FICP's Efforts to Demonstrate Your Impact

Did you know that FICP has an Influence Committee, comprised of volunteers from both the meetings professional and hospitality partner communities. This new committee is focused on positioning FICP as an influential organization of thought-leading meetings professionals and an educator and advocate on issues that impact the meetings and events industry?

Formed in 2017, this committee has developed the quarterly Pulse Surveys, established new partnerships with meetings industry organizations (including SmartMeetings and Northstar media), and started to build a database of thought leaders within FICP. The committee is currently seeking industry professionals who can speak to topics of interest – such as event disruptions (ranging from cybersecurity to natural disasters) or hosting innovative events in our industry sector. If you are interested in demonstrating your expertise as a contributor to articles, webinars or blogs, please contact communitymanager@ficpnet.com. Be sure to watch for future updates from this committee.
