Education Essentials: January 2021

Future of Work

[fyoo-cher]

1. something that will exist or happen in time to come.

2. a condition, especially of success or failure, to come.

While there still remains a degree of uncertainty about the future, the meetings and events industry is quickly learning how to adapt and be agile, especially as it relates to the future of work. No one knows for sure what the meeting and event space will look like in a year from now, but if there's one thing we've learned, it's that we need to anticipate future challenges, seize opportunities and learn from one another along the way. In this month's Education Essentials, you'll learn key tips for planning a hybrid event, how meetings professionals are responding to the effects of COVID-19, predictions for the hospitality and events industry in 2021 and more.

5 Tips for Planning a Hybrid Event

Due to COVID-19, Associated Luxury Hotels International (ALHI) had to pivot from traditional face-to-face events to hybrid events, which included in-person and virtual participation by attendees, in 2020. If you’re considering holding a hybrid event of your own, here are a few tips, such as preparing your speakers virtually, and offering an opportunity for in-person and virtual attendees to engage with one another.

Seize the Year

In this recent blog post, Jenna Jorge, President of Goodman Speakers shares how 2020 should be considered as the year that creativity was born from limitations, and the year to focus on yourself, while 2021 should be the year to focus on your career. As the industry continues to build upon virtual meetings more than ever, she encourages meetings professionals to build on what they learned in 2020, pour it into this evolving industry and share their stories.

What the Future Holds According to the Latest Pulse Survey

Great uncertainty remains with upcoming events and incentive programs as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. FICP continued to examine how plans are being impacted and adjusted in its Fall 2020 Pulse Survey. According to the survey, the majority of meetings professionals were hosting some or all of the corporate/business meetings and "other" meeting types virtually in lieu of an in-person experience, the majority of meetings professionals reported they've found Zoom to be the most successful virtual meeting platform, and meetings professionals and their organizations were revisiting future-event contracts with the area of greatest change being in the force majeure and pandemic language, which was cited by 89% of respondents. Uncover more insights from the survey here.

The Event Industry After COVID-19

While it's safe to say everyone felt the effects of COVID-19 to some degree, the hospitality and events industry was certainly one of the first to feel these devastating financial impacts. During this time of uncertainty, how can the industry best prepare for a new landscape in the hospitality and events industry post COVID-19? In this article, Meetingmax considers what changes may occur, and what opportunities lie within them. Some predictions on how the event industry will shift in the future include increased attention to contracts, hotels requiring more financial security upfront, supply and demand issues, and an increase in hybrid events.

#TBT - Incentive Travel Professionals Optimistic About Industry Recovery

Last month, the 2020 Incentive Travel Industry Index (ITII) survey results were released. The survey found that two-thirds of incentive travel buyers and suppliers expect incentive travel to recover within one to two years, once post-COVID conditions have been reached. Access the full findings here.
