CMP: Not Just Three Letters
As a member of FICP since 2000, in addition to being a conference planner for The Hartford, I serve on the Board of Directors for the Convention Industry Council (CIC) on behalf of FICP. The CMP Board of Directors includes one representative from each planner organization of CIC and four representatives from the supplier category. The CMP Board represents the profession's diversity and acts as a voice for stakeholders who have an interest in maintaining high industry standards.
What does this mean for you? One of my roles is informing the FICP Board of Directors and membership of the latest information on CMP activities. I work closely with the Vice President Education and Past-President to plan the CMP study sessions at the Education Forum and Annual Conference. To keep you up-to-date on any news, calendar of events, deadlines, etc. regarding the CMP designation year-round, we are in the process of creating a “CMP Center” on the FICP Web site.
I am passionate about this designation and what it can mean to you; especially if you are like many of your peers and have given the CMP designation some serious thought, but have not yet applied or sat for the exam. As you may know, the Certified Meeting Professional designation is not just three letters after your name: the foremost certification of the meetings, conventions and exhibitions industry, the CMP program recognizes individuals who have achieved the industry's highest standard of professionalism. Established in 1985, the CMP credential increases the proficiency of meeting professionals by:
• Identifying a body of knowledge
• Establishing a level of knowledge and performance necessary for certification
• Stimulating the advancement of the art and science of meeting management
• Increasing the value of practitioners to their employers
• Recognizing and raising industry standards, practices and ethics
• Maximizing the value received from the products and services provided by Certified Meeting Professionals
Through the CMP program, individuals who are employed in meeting management pursue continuing education, increase their industry involvement and gain industry-wide recognition. The requirements for certification are based on professional experience and a written examination. Currently, more than 13,000 individuals in 35 countries and territories have earned the CMP designation.
I encourage you to contact me if you have any questions or concerns regarding the CMP exam or upcoming activities. Congratulations to those who have earned this designation and best of luck to those beginning the journey.
Regards,
Linda M. Shaw, CMP, CMM

Congratulations to Our 2009 Member Recruiting Contest Winners
Thank you to everyone who participated in the 2009 New Member Recruiting Contest! The planner member who recruited the most new meeting planners to join FICP is Katrina Kent. She will receive two free round-trip American Airline tickets, donated by FICP, and the choice between a three-night stay at The Grand Del Mar, San Diego’s newest luxury resort, with breakfast for two each day and two rounds of golf at the Grand Golf Club or a three-night stay in a deluxe room at the Jumeirah Essex House in New York City with breakfast for two each day, donated by Associated Luxury Hotels. Whichever trip Katrina doesn't select, will go to Susie Wiesenfeld, our second-place finisher.
The hospitality partner contest was very close, resulting in a three-way tie for first place. Matt Barnett, Laura Manzano and Julie
