Advocacy Efforts Reaffirm Value of Meetings
The mood among FICP members and HPers is noticeably more upbeat than it was a year ago. More meetings are being planned, and 2011 is on track to be even stronger than 2010. Our industry has made the point that face-to-face meetings are necessary, and FICP member companies, generally, are showing they get it by booking meetings. While we’re not out of the woods yet ― particularly when considering environmental factors such as the recent airline travel disruptions caused by volcanic ash ― our industry is showing its long-term resiliency.
With apologies to our non-U.S.-based planners and hospitality partners, following are several snippets and links to bring you up to speed on efforts to advocate on behalf of the meetings and hospitality industry:
Economic Significance Study. Many planners received a comprehensive survey requesting data and benchmarking information for the meetings sector. The study is being conducted by PricewaterhouseCoopers, with results expected to be released by the end of the year.
“FACE TIME. It Matters.” is a grassroots industry campaign designed to promote the benefits of meeting face to face. The campaign was based on the findings of a recent national survey of corporate and association meeting planners, in-depth personal interviews with the industry’s leading executives, as well as focus groups consisting of corporate and association executives, business travelers and professional meeting planners.
Face of Travel. One in eight people are employed by the travel industry. Paco Saldaña, director of guest services at the Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island, Florida, was chosen by thousands of his peers to be the “Face of Travel.” If you did not have the opportunity to meet Paco at the Annual Conference in Toronto, click here to hear what he is doing to promote the value of meetings.
Impact of the Oil Spill. The U.S. Travel Association is working closely with member organizations in Alabama, Florida, Louisiana and Mississippi to monitor the situation involving the oil spill in the northern Gulf of Mexico. Click here to access their statement.
Travel Promotion Act Becomes Law. President Obama approved the first-ever national travel promotion and communications program to attract more international travelers to the U.S. Click here for the press release.
In 2009, FICP joined several other meetings industry organizations to become more connected with our industry’s advocacy efforts. The association’s work in this area is an important and beneficial part of your FICP membership. Our advocacy efforts are only as strong as our membership! Please help FICP enhance its clout by spreading the word about the value of FICP membership to your meeting planning and hospitality partner colleagues.
Best,

Steve Bova
FICP Executive Director

Nominations Open for 2011 Hall of Leaders
Since 1985, the CIC has honored the industry's outstanding leaders and innovators with its bi-annual Hall of Leaders awards. Nominations are submitted either by CIC member organizations such as FICP or the general industry community. A selection committee appointed by the CIC chooses the inductees, who are presented at a gala awards ceremony. Only those who have substantively contributed to the industry and whose efforts continue to shape it qualify for nomination. Click here to access the nomination form.
Maloni Named to Board of Directors
In accordance with the bylaws of the association, the Board of Directors has selected Lindsay Maloni to serve as the tenth member of the board, which became vacant when Jan Hennessey resigned from the association. Maloni brings leadership experience to the position, having previously served as the Northeast Regional Chair, member of the Regional Committee and several Design Teams. She is currently employed as a Conference Planner at MetLife.
Congratulations FICP Changemakers
