Planner Member Description

FICP membership is available to planners who are employed by an insurance or financial services firm (as described below).

Insurance

The insurance industry can be defined as companies that provide products such as medical insurance, life insurance, property and casualty insurance and other indemnity products designed to provide some type of financial relief to the policyholder - or designated beneficiaries - should a covered event occur.

Financial Services

The financial services industry can be defined, in general terms, as a collective group of companies or organizations whose primary revenues are derived from the development and/or marketing and selling of investment, banking and accounting products and services to the purchaser.

These organizations include:

  • Commercial and investment banks
  • Investment companies including asset management, brokerage firms and financial planning producer groups
  • Accounting firms

Association Meeting Planners

Professionals who work in a meeting, conference and/or event planning capacity for related associations are now eligible for membership in FICP. FICP values networking opportunities and partnerships with meeting planners in related associations. Professionals who plan meetings and events for related associations may now apply for full planner membership.

The association must represent or service the following industries/categories:

  • Insurance (including life, disability, health and property casualty)
  • Commercial and investment banks
  • Investment companies including asset management, brokerage firms and financial planning producer groups
  • Accounting Firms

Association professionals who wish to apply for membership will be evaluated on an individual basis. Membership is subject to approval by the FICP Membership Committee and the Board of Directors.

Please fill out a Meeting Planner Member Application.  Upon review, new member applicants will be contacted individually about membership and about how to submit dues payment.  For more information, or if you have questions, please e-mail membership@ficpnet.com or call (312) 245-1023.

Honorary Membership

The FICP Board of Directors may grant honorary membership in recognition for services provided to the association over a period of years, and usually to one who is considered to be permanently retired from the meeting planning business.  Honorary members may not be employed or otherwise involved in vending meeting support services. Honorary members are not required to pay dues and do not have voting rights, but are invited to attend FICP's Annual Conference.

Eligibility Requirements: Members must be in good standing and have maintained FICP membership for at least 10 years.

To be considered for honorary membership, please forward your written request to membership@ficpnet.com. The request will be forwarded to FICP's Membership Committee, who will make a recommendation to the Board of Directors for final approval.

Independent Contractors

FICP is frequently asked if an independent planner can become a member. An independent meeting planner is eligible for membership in FICP if he/she works for him/herself and is under contract with an eligible financial/insurance company.

In order to complete the membership application process, an independent planner needs to obtain a letter from the financial/insurance company documenting that the planner is under contract for that company and is authorized to be a member of FICP on behalf of that company.  In this capacity, the independent planner is actually representing the financial/insurance company and not their own interests.  Independent Contractors may only represent their registered financial/insurance company while attending any association events or when in contact with fellow FICP members.  At no time may the individual attempt to recruit new clients through FICP nor can he/she promote his/her own business.

Please e-mail letters to FICP Headquarters at membership@ficpnet.com or fax them to (312) 673-6920 prior to renewing your membership under your planner profile.  Letters must be received within 30 days of the renewal.  Independent contractors who do not provide a letter to validate their eligibility to be a member of FICP will forfeit their membership, and dues payments will be refunded.

For example, if Bob Smith of Bob Smith Events is representing Financial/Insurance Company X as a planner in FICP, he will be listed on all attendance lists, Web sites and directories as Bob Smith, Independent Contractor, Financial/Insurance Company X.

Meeting planners who work for third party planning companies are ineligible to become members or hospitality partners.  An independent planner who employs more than one individual is considered a third party meeting planning company and is not eligible for membership.  There is a fine line between independent and third party planners; FICP's goal is to be as flexible and fair as possible while maintaining the integrity and standards of membership.
