A panel of speakers, moderated by Regina Baraban of Financial & Insurance Meetings magazine, will discuss the ease and rewards of instituting meetings policies that are environmentally conscious. This esteemed panel consists of Shawna McKinley, The Green Meetings Industry Council; Michelle White, Fairmont Hotels & Resorts; and Tiffany Schermerhorn and Harry Lewis, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This session will cover a wide variety of topics surrounding green meetings, including how to identify and host a “green” meeting. Participants will learn how these environmentally-friendly events can save money and reduce unnecessary waste. Additionally, a federal perspective on how the government is working to better serve the environment will be offered by the EPA panelists.

Biography: A graduate of New York University's Masters Program in Publishing Studies, Regina joined The Meetings Group/Penton Media in 1997, after having worked for many years as a contributing editor. She has written for numerous publications, including Business Traveler International, Metropolis and Crain’s New York Business, and she has served as editor-in-chief of two interior design magazines as well as co-author of the book Successful Restaurant Design. Her work has won awards from the American Society of Business Press Editors as well as the Hospitality Sales and Marketing Association International.
Speaker Name: Harry Lewis, Attorney Advisor, United States Environmental Protection Agency
Biography: Harry Lewis is an Attorney Advisor in the Office of Pollution Prevention and Toxics (OPPT), Pollution Prevention Division (PPD) at the United States Environmental Protection Agency. He provides guidance and develops policy in the area of Pollution Prevention (P2) as it relates to industry performance. In addition to his work in P2, Harry has a professional background in proprietary and confidential business information and labor issues. One of his many responsibilities is to support the development of Environmentally Preferable Purchasing, including "green meetings" acquisition, throughout the Agency. Harry received his JD from the University of Baltimore and is admitted to the Maryland Bar.
Speaker Name: Shawna McKinley, Executive Director, The Green Meetings Industry Council
Biography: Shawna McKinley is the Executive Director of The Green Meeting Industry Council. She has worked as the General Manager of Oceans Blue Foundation, managing the creation of the green meetings toolkit at www.bluegreenmeetings.org. She served on the Convention Industry Council's Green Meeting Task Force and helped to create the IMEX Green Meetings Award. Prior to that, Shawna was engaged as a marketing and event planner in Nanaimo, BC, Canada. She holds a degree in Tourism Management with a major in Regional and Urban Planning and a Master of Arts in Environmental Education and Communication.
Speaker Name: Tiffany Schermerhorn, Procurement Analyst in the Office of Acquisition Management; Policy, Training and Oversight Division, United States Environmental Protection Agency
Biography: Tiffany Schermerhorn is a Procurement Analyst in the Office of Acquisition Management; Policy, Training and Oversight Division. Part of her work involves the development and interpretation of Federal and Agency acquisition policy. Tiffany works on various acquisition policy areas, including environmentally preferable purchasing. Currently, she is implementing guidance that will require EPA employees buying meeting and conference services to consider environmental preferable venue selections.
Speaker Name: Michelle White, Director of Environmental Affairs, Fairmont Hotels & Resorts
Biography: With a passion and dedication to preserving the unique ecosystems in which Fairmont Hotels & Resorts operate, Michelle White is an authority on sustainable operations within the tourism industry and a brandwide ambassador of Fairmont’s award-winning environmental program. In her role as Director of Environmental Affairs, Michelle is responsible for the day-to-day operations of Fairmont’s Green Partnership program, an environmental platform which has been recognized internationally by groups such as the World Travel & Tourism Council and National Geographic Traveler. Her extensive experience in the environmental sector, including positions with the Provincial Governments of Newfoundland and Nova Scotia and the Institute of Nature Conservation in Poland, has positioned her well to serve Fairmont, as the company continues to green its business. An expert in her field, Michelle, who holds a Masters of Environmental Science degree from Memorial University of Newfoundland, has also been recruited to sit on numerous boards and industry groups. Her affiliations range from a Board Member of the Green Meeting Industry Council to the judging panel of the World Travel & Tourism Council’s Tourism for Tomorrow Awards.
